Kizlaragasi Hani or Caravanserai Izmir

Kizlaragasi Hani or Caravanserai Izmir
This Ottoman Caravanserai (inn) is one of Izmir’s most interesting buildings, it was constructed in 1744 by Haci Besir Aga and is a rare example of this type of architecture to have survived to the present day.  The magnificent building has a 4,000m2 courtyard completely covered by a lead roof and because of its closeness to the harbour was always a very busy and active trading place.  In the past it was mainly used by visiting merchants from the East who came to trade their silk and spices.

After losing its importance as an inn and bazaar in the 18th and 19th centuries the building was only used as a warehouse for storage; it was restored in 1888 and again in 1933 and today visitors will find shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts, carpets, silver, leather goods and clothing. There is also a teahouse here where you can sit and drink a refreshing glass of Tea whilst soaking up the atmosphere of the Ottoman past.
