Transport in Izmir
AirIzmir’s International Adnan Menderes Airport is new and modern and fast becoming one of the busiest hubs in Turkey with both international and national terminals.
There are various transport options to and from the airport; the city-to-airport shuttle buses are operated privately by Havaş who run two services; the first connects to the north in Karsiyaka and the second to Alsancak the city centre in the south.
The rapid transit system İZBAN connects to the north in Aliaga and to the south terminus of Cumaovası, via Adnan Menderes Airport and several other places that include Karsiyaka and Alsancak and the İZBAN and Metro interchange with each other at Halkapınar station. The railway trains also run from the airport but are slow and taxis are available but can be an expensive option.
TrainIzmir has two historic main rail terminals in the city centre; Alsancak built in 1858 and Basmane built in 1866 with services running to Odemis , Tire , Selcuk , Aydin , Soke , Nazilli and Usak and intercity services to Ankara , Afyon and Bandirma ( Istanbul via the IDO connection). The commuter service run by IZBAN is the busiest in all Turkey has two lines and 31 stations along an 80km track.
MetroIzmir’s metro network also runs above ground and is constantly being extended with new stations being added each year. The Izmir Metrosu line begins at Üçyol in Hatay , south of the city, and runs to Bornova in the east. A new extension between Ucyol and Uckuyular should open early in 2013.
BusThe main bus garage (otogar) is in the district of Pinarbasi on the outskirts of Izmir and has intercity buses that operate services to all over Turkey and the main bus companies run free of charge shuttle services across the city to pick up their passengers. These two scheduled services are supplemented by privately owned minibus (dolmuş) services that run throughout the city.
