Ephesus Museum

Ephesus Museum
Ephesus Museum ( Efes Müzesi in Turkish ) located near the entrance to the Basilica of St. John in Selcuk ( 18 km from Kusadasi ), displays excavations from Ephesus and has two statues of the Goddess Artemis showing rows of multiple bull testicles (previously thought to be breasts or eggs) representing symbols of fertility, with miniature real and mythical beast figurines that honour her role as the “Mistress of animals”.

Inside the “Roman Period House Finds Room” are artefacts and interesting household items recovered from Slope Houses that were owned by the rich Ephesians, a bronze Eros riding a Dolphin taken from a 2nd century fountain, a faded 3rd century fresco of Socrates and phallic figurines of the gods Bes and Priapus.
Also on display is an Ivory Frieze from an upper story of one of the Slope Houses that depicts the emperor Trajan and his Roman soldiers battling barbarians.
There are busts and friezes from imperial cult temples, a collection of medical and cosmetic tools used by the important medical school in Roman Ephesus and a wall of portraits of Ephesian physicians.
The museum is well worth a visit and is always packed with visitors.
