Panionion Kusadasi

Panionion Kusadasi
Panionion is near Guzelcamli which is on the northwest of Priene that is on the northeast corner of the Dilek peninsula, and was very significant as it was the annual meeting place of the Ionian League and for being the oldest union of the colonies in the world.

12 Ionian Colonies Meetings

The league was a political union consisting of the members from the 12 Ionian Colonies and years later the city of Smyrna ( today’s Izmir ) also joined the league. The meeting in Panionion usually took place after the harvest where members would share their problems about sea-trade, business, farming and art and discussing ways in which to improve their own cities or find reasonable solutions to their problems.

A traditional festival was also held here every year to the honour the God Poseidon of Helliconia during which strong, young men from Panionion would hang cattle by their horns inside the temple to be sacrificed. During the Hellenistic period another one day festival was created to honour King Eumenes II of Pergamon.

Ruins of Panionion

During important excavations carried out by the German archaeologist Theodore Wiegand, some very significant artefacts were found in the area and the remains of a circular wall on St. Ilias Crest are considered to be the meeting place of Panionion.
On the south of this Crest, stands the small church of Hegeios Demetrios which  was once used for worshipping Poseidon, the god of the sea and earthquakes. The higher parts of St. Ilias Crest were surrounded by the limestone walls built to protect Panionion and there is a long thin structure standing in the middle that measures 18m x 4m that reflects the architectural style of 6 BC.
The eastern and the south-western parts of Panionion are in a bad condition and have only some seating areas and a Hellenistic turret that was used as an observation point.
East of the turret is a cistern that has its clay-made pots inside and date from the Hellenistic era.

How to get to Panionion

It is 25km south of Kusadasi . The National Park dolmus minibus passes through Güzelçamlı which is nearby, or why not takes a jeep safari around the Guzelcamli area.
