Pirate Castle Kusadasi

Pirate Castle Kusadasi
Pirate Castle is located at the end of a bay in Kusadasi and stands on rocks known as Pigeon Island. The Byzantine castle or fortress has two stories attached to its purpose, one says it was used in the 1500's by Kheir-ed-din Barbarossa, an Ottoman admiral and privateer (or as some say, a pirate) who used it a base when operating throughout the Mediterranean Sea and where he stashed his treasure, and the other story is that it was actually used as a defence against pirates.
It was used in Ottoman times for military purposes and today remains of the walls and towers are visible. The castle is surrounded by beautiful turquoise water, has a causeway giving it easy access, and along the shoreline opposite there are several restaurants and cafés.
