Ardahan

Ardahan
This is one of Turkey’s smallest provincial capitals located west of Çıldır town and is similar to Kars with a Russian grid plan and architecture, and has a large military presence.

It does have an excellent old bridge that crosses the Kura River which is opposite a vast citadel built by Georgians, restored by Selim the Grim in the early 16th century, and today remains as an army base where photography is strictly prohibited.

There are regular buses to Erzurum and Yusufeli that run from the bus station close to the citadel and from the town centre the dolmuş minibus will take visitors to Kars, Artvin and Çıldır.  The route northwest of Ardahan leads past vast plateaus of hayfields and climbs 2,640m high to the Çam Pass (Çamlıbel) and the north-eastern gateway to the Georgian Valleys.
