The road from Coruh River winds and zig-zags for several kilometres before you reach the town and it wide terraces suddenly appear on a steep slope and it seems to be higher than its 600m elevation.  The Livane Kalesi or Castle is unusually on the river down below but is occupied by the army, and the only other historical buildings here date from the Russian era and are hidden away on a hill above the centre.  It is a lovely place to spend one or two nights and hosts the Kafkasör Festival in mid-June every year where rutting bulls are pitted against each other, and wrestlers, jugglers, musicians and dancers from Turkey and Georgia draw a crowd of over 50,000; this is one of the only genuine folk fair events that take place in the country.

The bus station is in the town centre and there are various fairly basic accommodation options available and if you want to go during the festival book months in advance to ensure a room.  There are a few licensed restaurants and most places offer good and reasonably priced food and some have fantastic views.
