The original ancient town Tralles, now Aydın, was founded according to legend by colonists from the Greek Argive and Thrace on a plateau northwest of today’s city.
Aydin is famous for its figs and olives and dried figs are on sale almost everywhere.

Holiday Resorts of Aydin

The province of Aydin is home to several popular holiday resorts including  Kusadasi ,  Altinkum ,  Didim and  Akbuk .

Tralles Ancient City

The ancient Tralles site, Aydin’s biggest attraction, is off limits to visitors as it sits within a military zone 1km north of town although the Üçgöz (three eyes), three arches sited on a small hillock just outside the military zone can be viewed. These are yet to be excavated and according to locals they are the remains of three vaults once part of the gymnasium of Tralles.

Aydin Museum

The Museum of Aydin displays a wide range of local finds including a bust of Athena and a statue of Nike, coins, terracotta fragments and idols. The grounds hold an extensive range of larger items from Tralles including parts of statues and columns.

Other notable buildings here are the mosques; Süleyman Bey Mosque and Ahmet Şemsi Paşa Mosque and a rather strange fig sculpture 100m west of the otogar.

Transportation in Aydin

There is a complimentary shuttle bus that connects the town centre with the otogar 700m south. The train station, also in the centre, has services running to Izmir and Denizli . Izmir is one hour away by road. The dolmus otogar is on the main east-west street of Gazi Boulevard.

Restaurants and Accommodation

Accommodation in Aydın is mediocre and fairly expensive and most restaurants are tucked away in the backstreets around the bazaar.
