Bayburt

Bayburt
This is where you will find the largest fortress built in Turkey which dwarfs the town and is believed to have been constructed in the 6th century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian during his conflict with the Laz tribe from the Black Sea. The fort was later taken by the Bagratids, then seized and renovated in the early 13th century by the Saltuk Turks, and was a desirable pRize in the Russo-Turkish wars of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is truly amazing that the perimeter walls still stand in a good condition although nothing remains of the interior other than a good view.

Bayburt sits on the Coruh River and has several bank-side restaurants and cafés with views of the castle, and there are 13th and 14th century mosques established by the Saltuk Turks that can be visited. The main reason visitors pause in this town is for a break in their journeys between Trabzon and Erzurum .
