Dalyan

Dalyan
Dalyan, on the west of Fethiye and with easy access on the Highway 400, gained fame for its conservation fight against developers to cease construction on Iztuzu Beach , the breeding grounds of the loggerhead turtles.

Iztuzu Beach Opening Hours

The beach is protected between May and October, when the eggs are laid and wooden stakes placed to mark the nesting areas. The beach closes from 20:00 pm to 08:00 am.

Dalyan River

Dalyan River, the river that flows past the village and links the beautiful freshwater Koycegiz Lake with the sea, is the favoured means of transport to all the local sites using the many boats that cruise up and down. On sailing downstream, through the reed beds, the famed six rock tombs (4th-2nd century BC) are clearly visible with their façades resembling the fronts of Hellenistic temples, similar to those in Fethiye.

Dalyan Hotels and Transportation

On the eastside of the riverbank a large choice of pansiyons are available, the best of which located around the lake or göl. During high season these can be very busy and advance reservations are recommended.
West bound buses leave from Dalaman to Ortaca and from there you take the twenty minute (13km) dolmus ride into Dalyan town. The more comfortable hotels are situated on the Iztuzu Road. There is a regular dolmuş boat and bus service to the beach and some of the pansiyons offer their own daily motor boat service too.
Mountain bikes are available for rent as an alternative although there is a steep hill on route.

Places to Visit in Dalyan

Kaunos Ancient City

The rowboat ferry at the river end of Yali Street takes you to the ruins of Kaunos , a site which is both interesting for its archaeological and ecological importance.

Ekincik Bay

South east from Koycegiz sits the remote bay of Ekincik , becoming more popular for its natural beauty. This isolated, pretty and tranquil resort has an unspoiled 2km long gravel beach and small harbour and is good place for snorkelling and scuba diving.

Dining in Dalyan

Eating out in Dalyan town centre, with a few exceptions, can be pricey and lacking in Turkish authenticity. The outlying areas of town can offer a much better choice for your pocket and palate. There are a few bars in and around the town centre, some with laid back live music venues and others playing the loud thumping variety.

Dalyan Daily Boat Tours

One of the most popular and good valued tours offered is a day-tour by the “motorboat co-op” situated on the quayside that takes in the thermal springs on Koycegiz Lake, the Kaunos Ruins and Iztuzu Beach . Daily rental boats are available for groups of up to twelve and you can choose your own itinerary. A visit to the Ilica Thermal Spring and Sultaniye Thermal Spring is also very popular. Evening boat trips are offered from many of the riverside pansiyons to watch the fresh water terrapins surfacing for air and rowboats and canoes may be on offer too.

Other Activities in Dalyan

Other available activities are canyoning, scuba diving (at Ekincik), horse riding, mountain biking, sea kayaking and river rafting.
