Derinkuyu Underground City in Cappadocia

Derinkuyu Underground City in Cappadocia
Derinkuyu Underground City is only one of the 200 underground cities located in Cappadocia , however it is the largest and the deepest one.  The city is 85 meters deep, has 11 floors and it can accommodate up to 50,000 people.  Derinkuyu Underground City opened to visitors in 1965, however visitors can only access 10% of the city as archeologists are still applying excavations in the remaining sections.

Derinkuyu was first built during the Hittite times and enlarged in the coming years.
The main purpose of building Derinkuyu was to hide from those who are looking for slaves.

The city has rooms for families, churches, water tanks, air circulation systems, schools and many more.  To access Derinkuyu, people had to use one of the 600 secret doors into the city. These doors could only be opened from inside and outsiders could not use them to get access to the city.
