Kastamonu

Kastamonu
This town is 245km northeast of Ankara and is famed for being the location where Ataturk made his first speech denigrating the “fez” hat during his campaign against traditional religious headwear in 1925.  Kastamonu is a fairly conservative place and little has changed here since then although it does have some esteemed mosques, excellent Ottoman houses and a ruined castle that are worth a visit.

Places to Visit in Kastamonu

Things of interest here include the Nasrullah Kadi Camii mosque which is the largest and most famous, has 6 domes and was constructed in 1509, and the Asirefendi Han which is still used for commercial purposes; the modern building of the Yavapağa Camii hides the ruins of an older and larger mosque complex,
and the much repaired and restored Atabey Camii, a stone built rectangular building erected in 1273.
The Kale (Castle) built by the Tamerlane, who were usually famed for destruction rather than construction, which unfortunately has been ravaged by time and only the huge walls and main gate remain intact.
The excellent twin domed medieval mosque Ismailbey Camii sits on top of a rock next to a small park and the town’s museum houses locally found artefacts and miscellaneous items.

Transportation and Hotels in Kastamonu

The bus garage is a 15 minute walk from the centre of town and a fair number of hotels can be found here although standards are basic.

Kastamonu Restaurants

Many of the restaurants close when it gets dark although some pide and kebab salons remain open.
