Kaunos Ruins Dalyan

Kaunos Ruins Dalyan

Getting to Kaunos

Kaunos, accessible by tour boat or from the rowboat ferry at Dalyan and then walking in, is one of the most underrated and pleasant minor attractions on the coast. It is possible to drive from  Koycegiz but the paved road beyond the hot springs has many potholes and could make the journey long and difficult.

Kaunos Ruins

The amphitheatre, built on the slope of the acropolis, features
Hellenistic and Roman characteristics, with a capacity for 5000 spectators, remains in a fairly good state and is still occasionally used for performances. Much of the site has yet to be unearthed and a temple to Apollo just recently being identified. Northwest of the theatre are the Byzantine basilica and Roman baths, both in excellent condition. Further downhill are the Doric temple, agora and restored fountain house.

Wildlife

Wildlife there includes herons and storks in the summer, flamingos in the winter and terrapins, tortoises, snakes and lizards in all seasons.
