Ordu

This once ancient city known as Kotorya now has a population of 117,000 with a few of its older houses remaining on the green slopes of Boztepe that sit above a restored 19th century Greek Orthodox cathedral. There are no other historical remains other than in the museum that was once the home of the leader of escaping Muslim immigrants from the Caucausus during 1877-1878 and is a fine example of Black Sea architecture in the 19th century. The lower part of the building houses standard ethnography objects but upstairs are two bedrooms with original furnishings that have been wonderfully restored.
Ordu is famed for its chocolate with hazelnut products which can be bought everywhere. The town has a tourist office and the bus garage is 2km east of the centre; it has several rather unappealing hotels to offer and most visitors stop here for lunch rather than for the night and the restaurants serve local dishes that are made from chard and beets. The town also hosts and annual Volkswagen-bug rally.
