Rize
This is a modern city with a population of over 70,000, is famed for its Rize tea (çay) and in ancient times was the easternmost outpost of the Trapezuntine Empire known as Rhizos, although all that remains of this today is a tiny 8th century castle.

Rize Tea

The climate in this region is the best for growing tea and now its main source of income and the first plants imported and cultivated here was just before the Second World War brought by Asim Zihni Derin and within a decade became the regions core economy.  The town has a tea Institute that offers tea tasting, has botanical garden and shop on a hill that overlooks the town.  There is a famous tea garden in the town square that is the focus of Rize’s social life and is surrounded by shops selling tea along with tea cologne.

Amenities in Rize

There is a variety of different hotels, restaurants and pide (Turkish pizza) salons available and the from the main bus garage 800m west of town there are long distance buses, city buses and dolmus minibuses available.
