Tunca River in Edirne

Tunca River in Edirne
The Tunca River has the most historic bridges in Thrace and the best way to view them is to walk along the riverbank running parallel to the dykes and water meadows.

Saray and Fatih Bridges

Furthest upstream are the 15th century Saray (Süleyman) and Fatih bridges that join the left and right banks of the river with the river island of Saray Içi.

Saray Ici and Edirne Palace

This island today is the venue for the Kırkpınar oil wrestling tournaments although it was once the site of the Edirne Sarayi (Palace), the royal palace of Murat II which was blown up in 1877 by the Turks to prevent the Russians taking the munitions stored inside. All that remains there now are some baths, a tower and the modern concrete stadium for the wrestling.

Beyazit or Tek Goz Bridge

Following downstream is the 17th century Beyazit Bridge better known as the Tek Göz Köprüsü (one-eyed bridge) because of its single hump.

Beyazit II Complex

Over the bridge is the İkinci Beyazit Külliyesi the largest Ottoman spiritual and physical welfare complex ever to be built and constructed between 1484 and 1488 by architect Hayrettin. Within the single boundary wall and under 100 domes it housed a mosque, food warehouse, bakery, hostels for pilgrims and dervishes, medical school and an asylum for the insane. The therapy centre (darüşşifa) was where the mentally ill were treated using different techniques, such as the sound of music and water, the use of pleasant aromas and occupational therapy.
This is now home to the Trakya University Museum of Health that has a collection of old medical equipment and photographs.
