Van

Van
This is the capital of the region and sits on the eastern side of the lake.  It was devastated during the First World War, and what remained of its Ottoman heritage was destroyed by an earthquake in the 1950s; today it has a modern concrete layout accommodating 600,000 people.
The town itself is set back 4km from the lake and has
a backdrop of mountains with the ancient Van Kalesi or “Rock of Van” spectacularly located by the lake.  Van is mainly used as a base for exploring the surrounding areas particularly the Armenian island church of Akdama.  The town is best approached by boat from Tatvan which moors by the Rock but due to their unreliability visitors are more likely to arrive from Tatan’s scenic southern-shore route.

Transportation in Van

There is an airport 6km south of town where shuttle buses and taxis run to the centre and the bus station is northwest of the centre where dolmus minibuses and city buses are available.  The train station is 3km northwest of the centre and the ferry port 5km away where dolmuş minibuses and taxis are available.

Amenities in Van

Van has ample hotels, in all price ranges, fairly standard restaurants, cafés and breakfast salons where visitors can sample the regions famous spiced cheese.

Places to Visit in Van

Van’s main points of interest include the museum, tomb of Sarduri II (762-733 BC), a castle that in Ottoman times held 3,000 janissaries, a prominent ruined mosque with a minaret, the tomb of King Argishti (786-762 BC) and rock tombs of King Ishpuini (825-810 BC) and King Menua (810-786 BC).
In Old Van there are remains of 3 mosques and fragments of an Armenian church.
