Zeugma Ancient City
This Roman frontier crossing was guarded by the Scythian legion and other troops and the towns merchants grew wealthy from the border trade and built luxurious villas below the town. The Sassanid raids in 225 AD along with an earthquake devastated Zeugma and it was partly resettled during Byzantine and Abbasid periods.
Some of the town and the wealthy villas have been submerged by the Birecik Dam and the massive but rather late international archaeological rescue mission in 2000 managed to recover many of the magnificent mosaics, although unfortunately the frescoed walls were drowned.
The Zeugma Mosaic Museum is the largest of its kind in the world and contains 1700m2 of mosaics and opened to the public in September 2011.
