Abdullah Gul - 11th President of Turkey
Abdullah Gul was born on 29 October 1950 and is the 11th and current (as of 2013) President of Turkey and has served in office since 28 August 2007. He served as Prime Minister for 4 months during 2002-2003 and was a Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2007.
Childhood of Abdullah GulHe was born in central Anatolia in the city of Kayseri to his father Ahmet Hamdi Gül, a retired air force mechanic and his mother Adviye Gül (née Satoğlu), and the family had lived in Kayseri’s Gulluk district for over 100 years. According to the Cankaya Presidential Residence statement his ancestry/ethnicity is Turkish Muslim and his family called him Cumhur which means “people”.
Education of Abdullah GulGul was educated at the Istanbul University studying Economics and during this time he also studied in London and Exeter for 2 years. Whilst in the UK he was on the Executive Committee of the Federation of Student Islamic Societies (FOSIS). He went on to pursue an academic career working at the higher education facilities in Adapazarı and collaborated in the establishment of the Department for Industrial Engineering and teaching Management courses at the ITU Sakarya Engineering Faculty which in 1992 became the Sakarya University. In 1983 he received a Ph.D. degree from the Istanbul University and in 2009 he was awarded an Honorary Ph.D. degree from the Amity University NOIDA in India and a LL.D. degree from University of Dhaka in 2010.
Work life of Abdullah GulFrom 1983 and 1991 he worked at the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and in the same year became a lecturer in International Management.
