Mehmet the Conqueror

Mehmet the Conqueror
Fatih Sultan Mehmed Han
Father:  Sultan Murad II
Mother:  Hüma Hatun
Year of Birth:  1432
Accession to the Throne:  1444-1451
Year of Death: 1481

Mehmed ascended to the throne for a second a final time in 1451 (855H) and immediately started campaigns and gave no respite to enemies or allowed his armies to lose their zeal and slacken off and he aspired to conquer Constantinople from the very start of his reign, and in fact that is exactly what he did. After the conquest he marched towards Morea and captured Greek cities one after the other but came under threat from behind by the Karaman Principality and turned to Anatolia for assistance to defeat them and to seize their territory. He went on to take the area close to the western Black Sea and appointed Kızıl Ahmet, founder of the principality of Isfen-Diya, as the governor there and after that he fought and defeated the ruler of Akkoyunlus, Uzan Hasan.

Mehmed the Conqueror had a well built and robust body with muscular upper arms, a strong and long neck, ram-nose and full face that gave him a look of a lion. He was swarthy, had black shiny eyes and black eyebrows that joined together, a well proportioned chin, and lips like “sweet basil”.  His hair gave off a golden sheen that added to his heroic appearance. He was a man of great wisdom and intelligence, was an outstanding Turkish ruler and would not accept defeat under any circumstances. He dressed like his grandfather, Çelebi Mehmed, in a simple and heroic manner, his turban had a mucevveze (tall cylindrical headgear) worn in a military style wound around with coiled gauze and this style of turban became fashionable with later sultans.
