Sultan Abdulaziz

Sultan Abdulaziz
Sultan Abdulaziz Han
Father:  Sultan Mahmud II
Mother:  Sultana Pertevniyal
Year of Birth:  1830
Accession to the Throne:  25/6/1861
Year of Death: 1876

Abdulaziz succeeded his brother Abdulmecid and was the 32nd Sultan of the Empire. He had been well educated and trained by his father, and had observed how the state was structured and operated by his brother and joined him on his travels although he preferred to partake in Turkish culture rather than anything Westernised.

His biggest achievement was to modernise the Ottoman Navy, he established the first Ottoman railroad network, and on being impressed by the museums in London, Paris and Vienna, the Istanbul Archaeology Museum was founded. The declaration of Reformations was the starting point of Westernisation and the time of closer relationships with Europe and he bought books into the country to be translated, teachers were sent abroad for training or tutors where invited, especially for military training, and middle and high schools were opened with the purpose of extending education. Unfortunately due to the crop failure of 1873, Abdülaziz’s lavish expenditure on the navy and new palaces he had built, the mounting public debt increased public discontent and he was deposed by his ministers on 30 May 1876; his death a few days later was attributed to suicide although in Sultan Abdulhamid II's recently found memoirs, the event is described as an assassination by the order of Hussein Avni Pasa and Midhat Pasa. The State Council was instituted during his reign, the right of property was granted to foreigners, and he believed in the administration of the state under specific rules of law.
Abdülaziz was tall and heavily built, had a fair complexion with a short black beard and piercing hazel eyes and dressed simply as he was not ostentatious. He was trained in music and played the ney, a type of flute, well, was a composer and a poet.
