Abdulmecid was the 31st Ottoman sultan and his father made special efforts in his initial education by raising him as a Westernised prince who was taught French, and listened to and played western music on the piano. At the time of his accession the Empire was at a critical stage with ongoing battles on all the borders and he tried to create alliances with major powers in the United Kingdom and France who had fought alongside the Ottoman Empire in the Crimean War against Russia and following the Congress of Paris on 30 March 1856, the Ottoman Empire was officially included as one of the European family of nations.

 His greatest achievement was in 1839 and the application of the Tanzimat (Reformations) which effectively started the modernisation of Ottoman Empire. Other achievements and reforms included the introduction of the first Ottoman paper banknotes, reorganisation of the army, establishment of the first modern universities, academies and high schools, and various provisions to improve administration of public services and for the advancement of commerce. Also the “Literature of Reformation” that allowed the first novel and short story to be published. Abdulmecid was tall and slim with a fair complexion, had black hair, a short beard and deep dark brown eyes.
