When Yavuz was 44 when his grandfather ascended the throne and at that time his father Bayezid was Governor of Amasya. He forced his father to abdicate and fought his brothers who oppressed him and went on to become Selim the Grim. He immediately marched to Iran and gravely defeated Shah Ismail in the battle of Çaldıran, then trounced the ruler of the principality of Dulkadir, and the Sultan of Egypt conquering Cairo where he went on to become the Caliph which was an honour among the Ottoman sultans.


Selim had great courage and fighting skills and was destined to rule the world. He governed with justice, was liberal and generous and greatly rewarded the Janissaries for their services. He invented the “Taylesanlı Selimi” turban, the type that had the end of the cloth hanging down, and would wear this with his red velvet mucevveze that was similar to those worn by the Janissaries.
