Bosphorus

Bosphorus
Bosphorus, or Istanbul strait, is a source of pride for the Turkish people and it is one of the most breathtaking stretches of water in the world.
It has 30 km of coastline connecting the Marmara Sea and Black Sea. The width varies between 660 and 4500 meters. The Bosphorus is the coastline between the Rumeli Hisari and Anadolu Hisari lighthouses in the north, and the coastline from the Ahirkapi Feneri to Kadikoy Incirburnu lighthouse in the south.

Bridges of Istanbul to cross Bosphorus

You cross Bosphrous with two suspension bridges. Bosphorus Bridge, which was completed in 1973, is 1074 meters long. Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, or 2nd Bridge, opened to serve in 1988 and it is 1,090 meters long. Plans for the third bridge has been approved in 2012. The bridge will be located in the north side of Istanbul, between Garipce (European side) and Poyrazkoy (Asian side).

Istanbul Ferries to cross Bosphorus

Alternatively, you can use the ferries to cross the Bosphorus. The ferries are very frequent and they are available from number of districts, including Eminonu, Uskudar, Besiktas and Kabatas. They are very cheap and you can also use them for sightseeing.  Click for Bosphorus Cruise Boats
