Seljuk

Seljuk
This great empire was founded by Tughril Beg in 1037, it was a medieval Turko-Persian-Sunni-Muslim empire that originated from Oghuz Turks and controlled a huge area extending from the Hindu Kush to eastern Anatolia and Central Asia to the Persian Gulf. The Seljuk’s marched from their homelands which were close to the Aral Sea, initially into Khorasan, then into the Persian mainland and eventually going on to conquer eastern Anatolia. It was the Seljuk’s that unified the splintered political events happening in the Eastern Islamic world playing an important role in the first and second crusades.
Their culture and language was mainly Persian and they were hugely responsible in the development of the Turko-Persian tradition taking the Persian culture into Anatolia .  For strategic military purposes settlements of Turkic tribes were placed in the northwest borders of the empire to stop invasions from neighbouring states, which led to the progressive “turkification” of these areas creating cultures in various historical Turkish states, particularly the Ottoman Empire, and involved religious conversion, cultural and linguistic absorption whilst integrating ethnic relationships.
The Seljuk’s also established universities and were patrons of literature and art, and the famed Persian astronomer Omar Khayyam and philosopher al-Ghazali lived during their reign.
